Chapter 94: Typhon (6)
“Sorry—sorry! I said I’m sorry. I admit the joke went too far.”
Poseidon puffed out his cheeks as he tried desperately to calm Athena down.
She looked outwardly composed, but once she truly got angry, she stayed angry for a long time.
‘Seriously… having a brilliant mind means she remembers everything.’
“…You just had a weird thought, didn’t you?”
“N-No! I was just thinking about how to explain why I’m still in otter form. That’s all.”
Poseidon started sweating. Athena wasn’t just wise—her perception was terrifyingly sharp.
Sometimes, in front of Athena, Poseidon looked less like an ancient god and more like a flustered father trying to appease his stern daughter.
Athena sighed and decided to let it go.
It wasn’t dignified to act sulky over something so small.
But unlike her, the older gods nearby were looking on with warm smiles, while the younger gods wore awkward expressions.
“So then—why are you still an otter?”
Poseidon, seeing Athena softening a little, rushed to explain before she could interrogate him further.
“It’s nothing serious. I just got hurt pretty badly in my fight with Typhon’s Avatar, so my form shifted like this.”
“…What?!”
Athena froze.
For her, everything Poseidon had just said before completely evaporated—
Because the idea that Poseidon suffered injuries was horrifying.
“That’s impossible!! How could you—Poseidon—possibly get hurt!?”
Her shock spread instantly.
The nearby gods who had been secretly listening reacted the same way.
—We’re screwed.
—Yeah, I thought the same thing when I heard it. We’re so screwed.
—Zeus losing is like, “Oh no, that’s bad,”
But Poseidon getting wounded by an avatar?
That’s like, “This should literally not be possible.”
—If Typhon is that strong…
What chance do we have after already losing once?
Athena didn’t hear any of their whispers.
In her mind, Zeus losing was plausible—
He was careless, womanizing, lazy, and unfocused.
But Poseidon?
She had never imagined him losing, not even in a theoretical future.
“Stop saying nonsense! Zeus might lose sometimes—
He’s careless, he slacks off, he chases women all day.
It happens.
But YOU, Father—YOU don’t lose!!!”
Poseidon felt a bit awkward.
This was her father she was talking about, but the evaluation was… brutal.
“Ahem. I didn’t mean I lost. It’s just— At the time, I had my power sealed while I was playing on the surface. So I couldn’t unseal it fast enough, and I ended up getting a little hurt. That’s all.”
“Oh!!”
Athena exhaled in relief.
“Honestly… then you should’ve said that from the start! Why do you always chop off the important parts when you talk?”
That habit of his drove her crazy.
The eavesdropping gods also nodded vigorously.
—Ugh, right? Lord Poseidon always does that. At least now we know he’s fine.
—Agreed. Maybe that’s why Lady Hera always drags him around by the ear…
—And really, Typhon being on par with Lord Zeus… even if the Avatar had tons of power, there had to be limits.
—Exactly.
—Still… doesn’t something feel off here?
—Hm? Off how?
—Well… he said he fought a god’s Avatar while in a human body…
“…!!!”
The gods who had been whispering suddenly stared at each other in horror.
Now that they thought about it quietly, the whole situation was utterly absurd.
He had, in effect, fought a god’s avatar with a human body.
If anyone on earth claimed a human defeated a god walking the mortal realm, No one would have believed it.
Much less an avatar of Typhon—Even his clones should require Olympian gods to subdue.
—Holy crap… so he defeated a god’s avatar as a human?
—Looks like it. Rumor says Lord Poseidon often wanders the mortal world disguised as one of them.
—Huh… then did he fight like that while in that cute otter form?
—Honestly… that’s kinda adorable.
In truth, the real story was worse—He fought in the fully human form of Njord, But none of the gods even imagined something that insane.
It was simply too far beyond their expectations.
***
As the whispering grew louder, The atmosphere grew openly chaotic.
Athena slammed her spear into the ground.
“ENOUGH. QUIET.”
BOOM!!
The shockwave and tremor that erupted scared the gossiping gods into silence.
They immediately scattered—Because anyone who knew Athena understood that if they kept talking,
The next thing her spear would strike was them.
Once the crowd had dispersed, leaving only a handful of gods behind, Athena turned those owl-sharp eyes onto Poseidon.
“What on earth were you thinking!? What if you had actually died!?”
Poseidon flinched under her fury.
She wasn’t wrong— Gods were immortal in essence, But if a god descended fully into a human state, Severe injury could kill them.
Hardly anyone knew this, because gods no longer descended that way.
But in the most ancient age of the Protogenoi, Records hinted at such deaths.
(Though those gods were killed by the Protogenoi themselves…)
Poseidon opened his mouth to explain—
But Athena cut him off immediately.
“Don’t even try it. You’re about to say, ‘That god died because he fought a Protogenos in a human body,’ right? So what? The thing you fought—was it weak? Hm?”
“……”
Poseidon wisely chose silence.
If he said, ‘Well, the Protogenos was stronger,’ Athena would drag him somewhere private and scold him for an entire day.
Athena clutched her chest in frustration.
“Ugh… unbelievable!”
***
She scolded him several more times—
But eventually, she had no choice but to forgive him.
“Just… please don’t ever do something that reckless again. Why don’t you do what other gods do? Use an avatar! Or transformation magic! Those idiots wander around in fake bodies spreading their seeds everywhere— But YOU refuse to! Why!?”
“You said you forgave me…”
“I did forgive you. I’m just saying—honestly, even being dumb like Aphrodite would be better than this. She puts her mind into avatars and gets kidnapped half the time, And even that is safer than whatever you were doing!”
Poseidon, watching her continue to complain despite saying she forgave him,
Shifted his gaze to the gods lying battered around her.
Aphrodite—who had just been insulted as an idiot.
Apollo—who chased women as much as Zeus did.
The four winds—Boreas, Zephyrus, Notos, Eurus.
Even Ares—devoted to Aphrodite yet constantly entertaining mortal lovers.
‘Yep… that hit every one of them.’
At least Poseidon wasn’t suffering alone.
He felt strangely comforted seeing others get dragged into Athena’s scolding.
But he still lowered his ears and made a pitiful face—
Showing even a shred of confidence could lead to another week in Athena’s palace.
He knew from painful experience.
“So from now on—you will NOT do that again. Understood?”
“…Yes. I’ll be careful next time.”
“Good. Then that’s enough. But… doesn’t something feel strange around us?”
Just as Athena finally regained some rationality and scanned her surroundings, Poseidon hurried to reassure her.
If her attention shifted to the nearby gods, everyone would be in trouble.
“It’s nothing. Really. Everyone’s just… busy.”
“Hm… well, I suppose they are busy.”
Athena nodded and accepted his words without suspicion.
After all, with the defeat in battle, most gods were genuinely occupied.
And beyond this matter, Athena had countless issues that required Poseidon’s explanation and their joint planning.
Seeing that Athena’s focus had safely moved on, the gods still lingering nearby quietly gave Poseidon a thumbs-up.
‘Thank you…’
‘Don’t mention it.’
***
Leaving behind the gloomy gods, Athena and Poseidon moved to discuss their next steps.
Olympus had lost the battle, but they were nowhere near true despair.
The war was not yet decided.
Aside from Zeus, ten major gods were still unharmed and fully capable.
And given the injuries Typhon suffered, he would also be unable to act for a while.
Olympus at least had breathing room.
“Of course… we did lose our central pillar.”
“Ugh… yes, that’s a huge blow. But Lady Hera is still here.”
“Pffft! Ah yes… our dear Hera, gravely injured.”
Just thinking about Hera made Poseidon snort with laughter again, barely holding it in.
How could he not laugh, when the sister who strutted around acting superior had been knocked flat?
“Pff— so? Think Hera can handle it?”
Athena stared at him awkwardly.
Because behind Poseidon… A red-haired figure was looming.
“My stomach hurts from laughing… Athena, you don’t need to be so tense about Hera. That sister of ours, always acting high and mighty—then bam! She goes down! Kyahahahaha!”
“Really? Was Lady Hera always that full of herself?”
“Oh, you wouldn’t believe it. When she was younger, she was so stuck-up she was pract—”
Poseidon suddenly stopped.
A chill ran down his spine.
No way… could that be who I think it is…?
Yes.
When Poseidon fell silent, the voice behind him spoke again.
“Why did you stop? You sounded like you had more to say. What was she like when she was younger?”
“…She was… beautiful, fair, and righteous.”
“Is that so? Because it sounded to me like you were about to say something else.”
“N-no? I’ve always thought very highly of Lady Her—”
“Bullshit.”
With a sharp curse, the otter-shaped Poseidon shot straight upward.
Hera had grabbed him by the scruff, dangling him in the air.
His tiny otter arms and legs flailed uselessly.
Then Hera dragged him off somewhere while he screamed.
“Kyaaaah! Where are you taking me!?”
Athena watched with an awkward expression before sighing and turning away.
‘Yep. Family business. Don’t get involved.’
“That’s right. Issues like that are best ignored—they only make you tired.”
It was Demeter, who had approached unnoticed, offering Athena a bottle of wine she had aged herself.
“Come, instead of worrying about that mess, let’s talk about the child who created this wine. You had him preparing something, didn’t you?”
With her usual calmness—clearly used to these scenes—Demeter spoke lightly.
Athena, sharing the sentiment, accepted the bottle and shifted her focus to their upcoming plans.
‘Pathetic as he is… there are more important matters right now.’
“Yes. I prepared a contingency in case Zeus lost.”
***
When the war of the gods began—
Dionysus, with help from the goddess Rhea, was secretly searching for an entrance to the Underworld.
“Athena said… if this stone lights up, I’m supposed to head to the Underworld, right?”
He held a small pebble in his hand.
It looked like any common stone you could pick up off the ground—
But inside it pulsed a dense concentration of Athena’s divine power.
It hadn’t begun glowing yet, But Dionysus understood the gravity of the mission given to him.
If he succeeded, he might awaken his divine nature, Becoming a major god.
And even if he failed, the reward was still enormous—
A guaranteed position as a lesser Olympian god.
“This is… one of the most important opportunities I’ll ever have.”
